Source-based regulations

One of the most straightforward ways to address noise is at the source: for example, by setting limits on sound emissions from new vehicles or products. While it might be easiest to mitigate potentially harmful or disruptive sound before it starts, there are not always effective source regulations in place. Even in cases where source-based regulations are in place, it may be difficult to ensure those standards are maintained, for example once vehicles are on the road, and the concentration of many vehicles on roads or highways can raise the collective sound level beyond desirable levels.
